{"id":7916,"date":"2025-05-16T13:06:11","date_gmt":"2025-05-16T13:06:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wrti.go.ke\/?p=7916"},"modified":"2025-06-24T13:10:05","modified_gmt":"2025-06-24T13:10:05","slug":"mount-kenya-wildlife-conservancy-visits-the-institute-to-explore-areas-of-collaboration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wrti.go.ke\/?p=7916","title":{"rendered":"Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy visits the Institute to explore areas of collaboration"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As part of the Institute\u2019s strategic goal to strengthen collaboration, the Institute, on May 16<sup>th<\/sup>, 2025 hosted a delegation from the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy (MKWC), led by Dr. Robert Aruho, Head of the Conservancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The meeting focused on exploring potential areas of collaboration in wildlife research and training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Institute&#8217;s Director, Dr. Patrick Omondi, lauded the MKWC team for their commendable conservation work, particularly in safeguarding the critically endangered Mountain Bongo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He described the Mountain Bongo as a flagship species for the Mount Kenya ecosystem and a symbol of Kenya\u2019s broader biodiversity conservation efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The discussions centered on several key areas of collaboration:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Development of a joint research and monitoring programme with a specific focus on the Mountain Bongo and other endangered species.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Design of diploma and certificate training programs aimed at strengthening capacity in wildlife management.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Implementation of community outreach and engagement initiatives, including hands-on learning through structured exchange programs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adoption of emerging technologies such as AI-powered surveillance systems to enhance species tracking and data collection in national parks and protected areas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Establishment of a data sharing and information exchange platform to facilitate coordinated conservation actions and evidence-based decision-making.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Aruho emphasized that this potential partnership would strengthen joint efforts in research, species monitoring, and capacity building, contributing to the long-term sustainability of Kenya\u2019s unique wildlife heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also present during the meeting were Nelly Kuboka, (Ag.) Deputy Director \u2013 Corporate Planning, Partnerships and Strategy; James Mathenge, (Ag.)
