The research center is based in Malindi, Kilifi County. It focuses on coastal and marine ecosystems research to provide scientific evidence based information to support decision-making on both marine and coastal species population dynamics, habitat status and on marine protected area (MPA) management. The center engages in long-term ecological monitoring within six MPAs including Kisite-Mpunguti, Diani-Chale, Mombasa, Watamu, Malindi and Kiunga MPA.
The Inland Waters and Wetlands Research Center is located at the shores of Lake Naivasha. The center focuses on multi-disciplinary research programs that contributes significantly to the understanding, conservation, and sustainable management of diverse ecosystems of inland waters and wetland ecosystems and the biodiversity they support. The output of the research programs is aimed at actively informing policies and practices that safeguard inland waters and wetlands resources for the benefit of current and future generations.
The Montane/Forest ecosystems research center carries out and coordinates wildlife research and monitoring activities with a focus on Montane and forest ecosystems in Kenya. It comprises of the headquarters located in King’ong’o Nyeri with two sub-centers located in Kakamega and Kitale. The center focuses on multi-disciplinary research programs that contributes significantly to the understanding, conservation, and sustainable management of Montane and Forests ecosystems and the biodiversity they support. The output of the research programs is aimed at actively informing policies and practices that safeguard biodiversity resources in these ecosystems for the benefit of current and future generations.
Savannah, Arid and Semi-Arid Ecosystem Department (SASAE) is headquartered at Tsavo Research Center in Tsavo East National Park. It has sub- centers in Ruma National Park, Maasai Mara National reserve, Meru National Park, Tsavo West National Park, Nairobi National Park, Amboseli National Park, Nakuru National Park and Marsabit National Park. Spatial coverage is mainly the National Parks and Reserve and their influence zones.
