Scientific Services

WRTI endeavors to ensure that scientific information on wildlife resources are made available in order to support decision making on resources that affect human well-being, foster the use of scientific knowledge and the Precautionary Principle approach in wildlife utilization decision-making.

The Scientific Services Department is established to provide an array of services that seek to address both the Institute’s, KWS and stakeholders’ needs geared towards the realization of the four (4) pillars of the National Wildlife Conservation Strategy 2030. Its functions include the following:

  • Providing services on diverse wildlife research requirements for KWS, conservancies and other stakeholders in the country (e.g., laboratory services, wildlife husbandry expertise, mapping, economic valuation of ecosystems, Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES), assessments for establishment of wildlife enterprises, and assessments for establishment of ex-situ wildlife facilities such as captive facilities).
  • Providing monitoring services (e.g., habitat assessments, monitoring and evaluation; and environmental impact assessments and audits) for both wildlife species and habitats to guide wildlife conservation in Kenya.
  • Providing need-based research-oriented trainings and conferences.
  • Providing technical guidelines on wildlife management in the country.
  • Providing technical support in preparing management plans for conservation areas in collaboration with KWS and partners.
  • Providing conservation information and data to the diverse MEAs including CMS, CITES, CBD, and RAMSAR among others.
  • Undertaking assessments of the potential of wildlife areas for Payment of Ecosystem Services including REDD+, Water PES and other schemes.
