On 30th May 2025, the Institute hosted a specialized training on biodiversity valorisation, facilitated by Dr. Hartmut Meyer and Dagmar Honsbein from GIZ – the German Development Cooperation.
The three-day session brought together researchers and lecturers from various institutions to deepen their understanding of international frameworks on environmental governance and the sustainable management of biodiversity resources.
The training covered topics on securing informed consent, ensuring equitable sharing of benefits, and protecting the rights of indigenous and local communities over their traditional knowledge related to genetic resources.
Speaking on behalf of the Director, the Acting Deputy Director for Corporate Planning, Partnerships, and Strategy, Nelly Kuboka, emphasized the immense potential of Africa’s biodiversity.
“The genetic treasures of Kenya and Africa are not just relics of the past—they are assets for the future. And through smart, inclusive, and ethical valorization, we can turn these resources into drivers of innovation, livelihoods, and sustainable development,” she noted.
Kuboka also highlighted the strong collaboration between the Institute and GIZ, pointing out that the Institute is uniquely positioned to lead in science, education, and policy efforts to valorize genetic heritage. She acknowledged GIZ’s critical role in providing technical expertise and access to global networks, particularly through its Bio Innovation Africa programme.
This training reflects the Institute’s continued commitment to capacity building and evidence-based policy formulation for biodiversity conservation, ensuring that Kenya plays a leading role in the ethical and sustainable utilization of its natural genetic wealth.
