Hearts beyond bars: Institute extends compassion with CSR activity to Naivasha Women Prison

In a heartwarming show of solidarity and community spirit, the Institute extended its impact beyond wildlife conservation through a charity outreach to Naivasha Women Prison on 19th June 2025.

The visit, part of the Institute’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)initiatives, reaffirmed  commitment tosocial inclusion, dignity, and community engagement.

Led by the Institute’s Gender Committee, the outreach brought together staff and student representatives who delivered a range of essential supplies — including blankets, bedsheets, toiletries— aimed at improving the comfort and well-being of the inmates.

Receiving the donations, Ms. Dorothy Ngugi, Officer in Charge of Naivasha Women Prison, expressed deep appreciation for the gesture.

“We are sincerely grateful to the Institute’s Director, Dr. Patrick Omondi, and the entire management for this generous gesture. It means a lot to know that institutions like WRTI care about the welfare and dignity of our inmates,” said Ms. Ngugi.

This outreach is part of a broader programme of community-focused initiatives driven by the Institute’s values of service, compassion, and shared responsibility. While the Institute’s core mandate is research, training, and conservation, these activities reflect its understanding that strong, healthy communities form the foundation for sustainable environmental stewardship.

By reaching out to vulnerable groups, the Institute continues to foster positive societal change, strengthen its relationship with communities across the country, and demonstrate that conservation is not only about protecting wildlife but also about uplifting people.
