On June 4-6th, 2025, the Institute’s Senior Management and the Board Audit and Risk Committee members commenced a three-day Risk Management Implementation Training at Lake Naivasha Resort.
Making the opening remarks, Director, Dr. Patrick Omondi, underscored the importance of institutional resilience through proactive risk governance.
“As an Institute tasked with leading wildlife research and training in Kenya, we must anticipate and manage risks strategically. This training is not just a compliance exercise—it is a critical investment in our leadership capacity and organizational sustainability,” he noted.
The training was officially opened by Board Audit Committee Chair, Margaret Kariuki, who noted the training aims to deepen the understanding of risk management frameworks and strengthen the Institute’s ability to navigate uncertainties in a dynamic environmental, research, and policy landscape.
Participants explored a wide range of topics, including strategic and operational risk analysis, defining risk appetite and tolerance at the institutional level, business continuity and crisis management planning, and ensuring compliance with governance frameworks in the public sector.
The training addressed emerging risks specific to wildlife research and training, helping the Institute align its operations with modern risk management standards.
The sessions were facilitated by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), reinforcing the Institute’s commitment to aligning its practices with national standards and enhancing risk-informed decision-making.
This initiative is part of the Institute’s broader commitment to good governance, institutional excellence, and the long-term sustainability of wildlife research and training in Kenya as outlined in the Strategic Plan (2023-2027).
